Job Title: Assistant Professor of Human Nutrition
Purpose:The School of Food and Agriculture seeks candidates for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track assistant professor position in the program area of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSN). The candidate will teach and advise in the undergraduate and graduate nutrition programs, and establish an independent, externally-funded research program in human behavioral nutrition.
This is a 50% research and 50% teaching tenure track position. Teaching assignments include: FSN 401 Community Nutrition (4 credits) FSN 101 Introduction to Food and Nutrition (3 credits) in alternate years, FSN 671 Advanced Graduate Seminar (1 credit) each semester, and a graduate course in alternate years. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to advise FSN undergraduate majors, support undergraduate research and honors thesis projects, and to both recruit and advise graduate students.
The School of Food and Agriculture (http://www.umaine.edu/foodandagriculture/) has 35 faculty members, over 450 undergraduate students, and about 50 graduate students. In addition to FSN, the School offers B.S. degrees in Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Environmental Horticulture, and Sustainable Agriculture, as well as graduate degrees in a range of programs. School research efforts focus on the sustainable production of plants and animals, on nutritious diets that promote human health and well-being, and on safety and production issues important to food and agriculturally-related businesses. The wide range of academic interests in our School offers new faculty many opportunities to participate in, and develop, multi-disciplinary research and teaching teams.
Duties and Responsibilities:The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in behavioral or community nutrition. Examples of possible areas of specialization include: 1) effective models for nutrition education and behavior change, 2) understanding environmental influences on nutrition and physical activity behaviors, 3) nutrition education interventions to reduce chronic disease risk and/or prevent obesity, and 4) environmental approaches that promote healthy communities, food systems, and behaviors. The successful applicant should have the skills and interests to enable possible participation in a successful multi-state project on behavioral and environmental assessments of factors associated with nutritional health in young adult communities. Available resources at the University of Maine include the Mary Simcock Lynch Clinical Nutrition Lab, including equipment for conducting dietary and physical assessments. The Dr. Matthew Highlands Pilot Plant and commercial kitchen house food processing equipment and are available for teaching activities.
Collaboration is possible with faculty in the School of Food and Agriculture including those specializing in human and animal nutrition, food systems, food analytical chemistry, food processing, and other disciplines. There is also potential to collaborate with faculty in the School of Nursing, School of Biology and Ecology, Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, School of Economics, Department of Psychology, and College of Education. Due to the nature of this research, the new hire should be competitive for funding from multiple funding sources such as the USDA, CDC and NIH.
Qualifications:An earned doctorate in Nutrition or a closely-related discipline is required by date of hire.
An RD/RDN credential is preferred.
Post-doctoral or equivalent experience is preferred.
Documented ability to conduct high-quality scientific research, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, is essential.
Other measures of potential for success are desirable, such as prior success in obtaining funding; excellent communication skills; and successful experience in college-level instruction, mentoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration. An interest in food systems is beneficial.
